Dear Parents,

This week has been our least favourite week of the year as the Year 6s have had to do their SATs tests.  I have however been incredibly proud of them. They have remained positive, focused and upbeat throughout.

We have still done a number of exciting things.  On Tuesday a member of the Parliament Education team came to talk to the children about parliament and how it works.  He was very impressed by how much the children know about our democracy.

We have also had a member of the road safety team in talking to the children about staying safe near the roads.

The Kites have been out at a cricket event.  They bounced back having had a wonderful time.

Some of the children in Peregrines and Ospreys represented us at a Gymnastics event.

Last Friday we had House Dinners.  This is part of our ongoing efforts to support the children having good table manners.  Whilst a number of the children can use a knife and fork there are children across the school who cannot.  We would love you to also help them to learn this skill.  We also practice having good conversations over the dining table.  The other positive of this is that the children get to sit with children from other classes and the family feel of the school can grow.

We are waiting for a number of slips back from parents.  Eagles still need to return Jubilee concert and Whitehall slips; Kites need to return Magna slips.  If you haven’t returned the slip to say your child either can or cannot go to an event please can you as soon as possible.

On Tuesday 24th May staff from Glossopdale will be coming down to talk to the Year 6 pupils starting with them in September.  They will be available to talk to any parents of these children in the playground at the end of the school day.

Next week is walk to School Week. We encourage everyone to walk, scoot or cycle to and from school that week.  If you live too far away to do the full distance you could park further away from school and walk some of the distance.

I am attaching a letter from the PTA about this year’s raffle.  We are combining the pulling of the raffle with the school’s celebration of the Queen’s Jubilee on Friday 27th May.  Parents are invited to join the street (playground) party from 2.30pm.  On that day if the children would like to dress in red, white and blue they are very welcome to.

Dear Parents,

I hope you enjoyed your long weekend, it felt very strange coming so soon after the Easter holiday.

Eagles parents I hope you have managed to get tickets for the Jubilee performance at Buxton Opera House 2pm 13th June.  Remember you need to get them from the Opera House not us.

If your child would like to take part in the Glossop Victorian Weekend Parade with school on Saturday 28th May please return the slip as soon as possible.  If we do not have enough expressions of interest we will not be able to take part.

There have been reports of head lice in school.  Please can everyone check their children’s hair regularly.  If you find lice please treat the child and the rest of the family.  You can get rid of them by putting conditioner on their wet hair and using a fine tooth comb, combing out any lice, this needs to be repeated every three days for two weeks. Alternatively, you can get treatments from a chemists, again these need to be repeated.  Having head lice is nothing to be ashamed of most of us and our children have had them at least once.  My son even asked if he could keep some as a pet!

I have noticed that some children are carrying their school reading books in their hands not in a book bag.  Please can children have a book bag.  If the books get wet they start to deteriorate quite quickly and we need to be able to use them for as long as possible.

As the eagle eyed of you will have noticed Mrs Shepherd is pregnant.  We are all very excited to meet her baby when it arrives in the summer.  This also means people are starting to ask who the teachers will be in each class next academic year.  The plan at the moment is (I say at the moment because it is four months away and things can change):

Reception : Mrs Hillier and Mrs Fletcher

Year 1:        Miss Ellwood and Mrs Maniak

Year 2:        Mrs Eltringham and Miss Grandidge

Year 3:        Mrs Clayton / Mr Groarke and Mrs Taylor

Year 4:        Ms Noble and Miss Campbell

Year 5:        Mr Holt, Mrs Harris, Mrs Pierce, Mrs Swift and Mrs Woolleson

Year 6:        Ms Byron and Mrs Day

Please don’t focus on next year with your child.  We have a lot of exciting learning still to do this year.

Stay happy and healthy

Dear Parents,

I hope you all had a lovely break over the Easter Holiday.  I know the children did because a number of them had got so much into the holiday mode they didn’t want to come back.  They are all now back and settled which is lovely.

Welcome to our new Reception families who should be receiving this newsletter for the first time.  We are very pleased that you are joining our school family.

The after school clubs run by school have restarted which is great.  Thank you to all the staff who are giving up their time to run a club for the children.  Most days pick up will be from the main entrance, Monday is the busiest day so we are trying to find the best way to safely see the children out.  If the children are at Sports they can picked up from the playground, Drama from the hall door and gardening from the main entrance.

We are going to try opening up still further and invite you to join us for Collective Worship (Assembly).  If your child’s class is leading the collective worship on a Friday morning you are very welcome to join us.  I would ask that no more than two adults from a family come and that you wear masks.  The dates for these are on the attached dates list.

There are a number of exciting events planned for this term.  On Friday 27th May we are going to have a Jubilee Celebration Event combined with the PTA raffle and afternoon tea.  How I think it is going to work is that from 2.30 you are invited to join us whilst we are having a street (playground) party.  The PTA will be selling cake and drinks to the parents and the annual raffle will be drawn.  This is an evolving event so more details will follow.

The day after this is Glossop’s Victorian Weekend.  We are going to take part in the parade on Saturday 28th May, meeting at 10.30.  The theme of our parade is Victorian Protests so Suffragettes and Anti-Slavery marches.  With the children dressed in appropriate clothes and carrying placards etc.  I do hope your child will be able to join in the parade with us.  A sign up letter is coming out.

The Year 5s are involved with a jubilee sing at Buxton Opera House.  On Monday 13th June the children will be singing in a care home in Buxton and at the Opera House.  You are invited to the Opera House performance at 2pm. Here are the details:

Tickets are free, but booking is essential. You can book 2 tickets per child/per sibling group. Tickets can be booked via the Buxton Opera House website or by calling the Box Office on 01298 72190

Booking link: https://buxtonoperahouse.org.uk/event/jubilee-singing-celebration

I have attached dates for this term.

Dear Parents,

Congratulations to the children who represented the school at Aquasplash on Tuesday, they all did us proud.

Today we are holding our Easter Service at 2pm.  As the number of cases of covid are rising nationally we are only inviting the parents of Year Six to join us in church.  Year Six are leading the service which is why we are inviting their parents.  I am very sorry not to be able to invite you all, hopefully next year.

We finish for Easter tomorrow Friday 8th April and return to school on Monday 25th April.  I hope you all have a good few weeks.

Thank you to everyone who returned the slip about choir availability to sing at the Fairtrade event.  Not enough children are available so we will not be able to do this.  I am sure there will be lots of other events we can sing at.

The church have organised an Easter Peg Hunt.  Here are the details:

I have been asked to share this information with you:

In addition, children and families can find online activities and ideas for low-cost activities to take part in at home on the It’s About Me website: https://itsaboutmederbyshire.co.uk/

If your child is in Key stage 2 and you owe any dinner money please pay it by the end of the day tomorrow.

I am attaching the term dates for 2022/23.  I know it feels such a long way away but having the dates will help you make sure you don’t accidently  take holidays in term time.

Please see below a message from Mr Beaman;

Just a quick message to say thanks again for the donations. In total St Luke’s added £2588 which is amazing. £2K from the first donation and £588 from the second (there was only £230 left in match funding when the donation was added)

On the day the weather was kind (although I think we had four seasons in one day) and I managed to finish in 3 hours 47 minutes. I was very glad to see the finish line, the last 10k was tough going 🙂

Thanks again
