Dear Parents,

After the end of the school day on last Friday of term we received some very exciting news. Two of the films we entered into the Thank You Film Awards have been shortlisted. The children involved in making these films have been invited to an Awards Ceremony at The Print Works in Manchester. Numbers are limited so we have not been able to invite parents to come to the ceremony and see the film on the big screen. Instead we will show the films in Assembly this Friday 2nd May and after school, about 3.35, on Wednesday 14th May.

We are holding Sports Day next Thursday 8th May. You are very welcome to come and watch. We will start as soon after 1.30 as we can. The children just need to bring their sports kit and a hat should it become very sunny. We will provide everything else they need including drinks.

Thursday 8th May is also plant pick up day. If you ordered any plants from the PTA plant sale they will be available for collection after school.

Remember Monday is a Bank Holiday so although we have only just got back there will be no school on Monday. Easter being late has made this feel as if it has come round very fast.

Remember the PTA Quiz night will be on Friday 16th if you fancy a fun evening with other parents from school do come along.

Parents of children in Reception and Year One have received letters about the new universal free school meals starting in September. Please send these forms back as soon as possible as I have to send information off to The Local Authority. If you have not got your letter there are spares in the office.

I am including this term’s dates in this newsletter, as ever these may change.

Dear Parents,

I am so sorry I had to postpone sports day, the weather was just not good enough. We will try again on Wednesday 11th June.

All the classrooms in school are busy happy places at the moment. We have people jetting off to space, I am a little concerned about the cow they are taking with them! Others are travelling back in time to meet historical characters. Whitby is growing on one wall, serpents being made in another room. I have seen excited maths relay races and dinner being chosen in French, scientific concepts being tried out in the hall and children talking about their reading. The ever growing choir is singing sweetly about smiles and the older children are starting to think about their summer production. All in all school feels happy and productive.

Next week is assessment week. The least helpful thing for the children is for them to be worried so please reassure the children. The children in all year groups from Year 2 up to Year 5 have a go at a test produced externally but any results form only a part of our assessment of where they are and what they need to do next. Their real use is in helping to learn how to take tests. The Year 6s will be doing externally marked tests, SATs, the results of these are reported to their secondary school but again form only a part of the assessments that are passed on. Much more weight is given to the Teacher Assessment based on work over time. What I am trying to say is please help your child put these assessments into perspective. The best thing they can do this weekend and next week is have fun, get plenty of sleep and make sure they have breakfast.

The PTA quiz night is fast approaching, it is a week tomorrow, so do get your tickets soon.

There will be no family assembly on Friday 16th May and on Friday 23rd May it will be at 2.30pm

On Wednesday 14th May I will be showing the Thank You Films in the hall at the end of the school day, 3.35ish.

Glossop Cricket Club’s Friday night coaching restarts this Friday 9th May. If you have a child in Years 1-6 (boy or girl) who might be interested in learning to play cricket do go along. Registration is from 6.20 and coaching is from 6.45-7.45. I know a lot of children from St Luke’s go every year and thoroughly enjoy it.

Dear Parents,

Last Friday the Eagles landed from Whitby.  They were tired but elated having had ‘The Best Time Ever’.  They learned so much Geography, History and PSHE in that short period of time.  A huge thank you goes out to Mrs Malkin and Mrs Harris who gave up their own time to enable it to happen.

Saturday saw the choir singing sweetly at the Fair Trade Concert in New Mills.  I was so proud of all the choir who sang beautifully and as ever behaved impeccably.  Again thanks needs to go out to the staff, Miss Byron and Mrs Hillier, who gave up their time to enable the children to have this experience.

Today is a busy day with the Fire Service coming into Years 2 and 6 to talk about fire safety and then the houses getting together to take part in our eggsiting egg decorating challenge.  This is an opportunity to learn through fun.  The children are learning life skills to get them ready for the world of work.  They are learning to work together with many different people, to share ideas, to sometimes not have their ideas adopted, to take on different roles within a task and to have leadership skills.

On Friday it is the Easter Service in church first thing, well as soon as we have registered the children and walked them over to church.  Everyone is very welcome to join us.

In the afternoon we have the Easter Raffle and Tea.  You are invited to join us for cake and a drink whilst we draw the raffle.  The children are asked to bring in £1 for a drink and a cake.

We finish for Easter on Friday at the normal time and school reopens on Monday 28th April.  I hope you all have a lovely holiday.
